Your heart’s racing, and those red and blue lights appear in your mirror. What you do next matters. Whether it’s a simple traffic stop or something more serious, you should take the following steps.

Stay calm and pull over safely.
Be respectful, but know your rights. Arguing or acting combatively never helps.
Keep your hands where they can see them. Don’t reach for anything unless you’re told to.
Provide identification when asked.
Exercise your right to remain silent. Don’t explain or defend yourself without an attorney present.
